![]() ![]() Its charismatic characters progress, inch by inch, in pursuit of grand romantic love and career clout while taking for granted what’s already aspirational about their lives: to be entrenched with people who you know so well. In Season 5, “Insecure” leans into its legacy for awkward small talk in place of punch lines and tensions that roil between the lines of every text message. “If you knew the end was coming, how would you make the most of your time left?” Kelli asks in the premiere episode, winkingly. The finite dynamics of the same half-dozen characters falling in and out with each other deepens storylines even as it limits them. There’s a gratifying rhythm to its recurring shot-list: beautiful food, vibrant murals, Issa in the mirror. “Insecure” has always fit the mold of a sitcom rather than subverted it. It never thrills like a series racing toward crescendo, but that’s OK. New faces are scarce, though a beefed up role for Issa’s intern-turned-employee Quoia, played by Courtney Taylor, is a hilariously welcome exception. The four episodes of Season 5 that screened for critics made for discontinuous viewing there are jumps in time and geography and perspective that belie how far some of the characters have drifted. How high the stakes feel depends on which dyads you’re rooting for most: Tiff and Kelli, Issa and Molly Issa and Nathan, or Lawrence and Issa. Occasionally, the show’s conflict escalates past the point of sitcom to soap opera, like Condola’s unexpected pregnancy, but mostly what’s hard about life is the accretion of small disappointments. And how things are going for Molly on the dating apps can affect her patience for Issa. In the Season 1 pilot as in the Season 5 premiere, career frustration elliptically compels a reckoning in Issa’s love life. ![]() But the series has long excelled at braiding together what other shows merely stack. The conflict on “Insecure” isn’t novel - impostor syndrome, friendships strained by jealousy and neglect, the bruising search for love. It’s a mode of reconciliation as cheap as it is honest, but this is how long friendships sometimes persist: not by working through every issue, but by mutually avoiding the tripwires. Season 4 was factious, especially between Molly and Issa, but here they roam the palm tree dotted Palo Alto campus and let reminiscing wash it all away. Which is why Issa, Kelli, Tiffany, and Molly’s 10-year Stanford reunion makes a rich setting for Sunday’s premiere. “Insecure” is at its most indelible when walking the emotional warren of its female friendships. “You talking about the world or you talking about us?” Issa responds, though the answer is obvious. “Are we going to be OK?” Issa’s best friend, Molly (Yvonne Orji), asks her early on in the series’ final season. Regular life is not knowing what to say next and regretting what you said last. Regular life is an argument with your friend that stems from a slight so specific you’d be embarrassed to explain it to a stranger. The problems of Issa Dee, played by Rae, are as boring as they are visceral. ![]() Race is far from incidental (“Insecure” conspicuously highlights LA’s historically Black neighborhoods, for example), but it’s never been the show’s deep well of conflict. (Well, the only show created by and starring the same Black woman - Ava DuVernay’s “Queen Sugar” premiered a month earlier with Rutina Wesley and Dawn-Lyen Gardner, among its all-Black cast.) Based on her award-winning web series, Rae devised a chummy, sharp comedy about “ regular Black people living life” in the California sunshine. When “Insecure” premiered on HBO in 2016, it was the only show on TV created by and starring a Black woman. ![]() ![]() We’ve already mentioned the modifier knob, but next to that are the Spread and Scan controls. The ones below it though are where the interesting things happen. One important thing to note is that, as you increase or decrease the size, there is no change in pitch. There’s level, repeats (feedback) and size (time). The controls across the top are, more or less, what you’d expect on a standard delay pedal. ![]() Crank that and you get heavily degraded, almost granular effects (which you can really lean into with the Spread and Scan knobs, but more on that later). Turn the Modify knob to the right and you’ll find rhythmic patterns to the left and the echoes will randomly disappear. Meanwhile Dropper causes your signal to drop out, appropriately enough. ![]() Trimmer slices bits of audio off the start or end of a note and can be used to create complex stuttering rhythms. But the two most interesting are probably the trimmer and the dropper. The other modifiers include tape-like lo-fi effects, smooth pitch changes and a multimode filter. This means that even if you don’t touch any of the other controls you have seven distinct delays at your fingertips. To the right of 12 o’clock plays the repeats forward, while to the left plays them in reverse. For example, modifier A-1 is a stepped speed change quantized to fifths and octaves. ModifiersĮach modifier has two different variations, depending on which way you turn the knob. This is hardly dealbreaker, but connecting audio, power and expression does eat up a little more real estate on your pedalboard than if the jacks were on the top. Instead you need a special adapter box or a custom wired cable to connect other MIDI gear to Habit.Īlso, because Chase Bliss has to make room for the dip switches all the jacks are on the sides of the pedal. The MIDI port on the other hand is a bit of a downer, especially now that ⅛-inch TRS MIDI is a widely adopted standard. I have a small handful of stereo pedals in my collection, and I almost never actually use them in stereo. Frankly, I don’t think the former is a major issue. The two primary knocks against it on the hardware front are a lack of stereo outs and a nonstandard ¼-inch MIDI connection. They’re small touches that elevate a Chase Bliss pedal above other players in the market, which is important when you’re charging this much. Now, there’s not a ton of ways to stand out in the pedal game if you’re sticking to standard sized metal enclosures, but Chase Bliss opts for knurled metal knobs and the LEDs are nestled inside tiny metal calderas. The hardware itself is likewise a step ahead of the competition. ![]() ![]() at the Filipino Community Center to do some litter pick up and gardening. Something for everyone! A second wave of heroin-related overdoses emerged, in part, owing to a decrease in prescribing opioids, followed by a third wave of synthetic opioids, predominantly fentanyl. An initial wave was related to increased access to prescription opioids. Some have characterized the growing use of methamphetamine and other stimulants, together with fentanyl, as a “fourth wave” of the opioids epidemic. “It’s important to recognize that these are not independent phenomenon.” “We have a tendency to view every substance independently from one another,” Dr. ![]() ![]() I watched the CMA Awards last night at our house and let me just say. Point Blank utilizes a dizzying of innovative visual, editing and sound techniques, as well as a fractured and disorientating narrative structure, all of which reinforce the notion of a blurring between dream and reality.Īlive? Sleeping? Dying? Dreaming? All of the above? A dying dream experienced by Walker, from the moment he is shot by Reece at the beginning of Point Blank and left to die in a dank prison cell at Alcatraz, until the final frame of the film. On another level, Point Blank can be interpreted as the dream of a dying man. On closer viewing, however, Point Blank possesses a surreal disorientating dreamlike quality. On one level, Point Blank can be viewed as a straightforward story about betrayal, vengeance and greed. He also wants to retrieve the $93,000 he is owed from the robbery. Seemingly recovered, Walker rampages through the remainder of the film seeking revenge for the betrayal of his friend and his wife. Yet Walker somehow manages to survive the gunshot wounds. He also takes Walker’s wife Lynne (Sharon Acker). Reece then takes Walker’s share of the robbery money ($93,000). Reece shoots Walker at point blank range, leaving him for dead, convulsing in the corner of one of the prison cells. Point Blank (John Boorman, 1967) is a crime film that centres on Walker (Lee Marvin), a violent criminal who seeks vengeance when his friend and partner in crime Mal Reece (John Vernon in his first feature film role) double-crosses him after a robbery at the old disused prison on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. Will he retrieve the money? Has this all been a dream from the beginning when he was left to die? It all comes down to Walker going back to the place that haunts his memory: Alcatraz. He won't relent until his gets the money. Walker simply holds the whole Organization accountable. Since Reese wouldn't give him the cash, Walker disposes of him and move to the next guy in line. Walker enlists the help of his wife's sister (Angie Dickinson). Reese is a top man in the syndicate this time around, so getting to him is not easy. Now it's up to Walker to hunt down Reese through his connections. As the sound of footsteps come to a halt, we see Walker uninhibitedly barge in his wife's front door with a gun in hand, knock her down, and head right for the bedroom-blasting away several rounds at the bed. Since his wife is the person closest to him, and because she had an affair with Reese, Walker goes straight for her first. Shots of his wife getting out of bed, going out, and coming back home play while the pounding of his footsteps overshadow it. Walker does a lot of walking throughout the movie, going from one place to another until he finds justice. Walker is fiercely determined, a man on a mission. At the inception of this storyline we see Walker stomping down a corridor, his footsteps loud, repetitive, pounding. Now all Walker wants to do is get his money back. His old pal Mal Reese (John Vernon) filled him with bullet holes and left him to rot, presuming he was dead or would die soon anyway. You may each take one slice from the control loaf. You could say this game is the best thing since sliced bread. I mean, the basic concept is super simple, but then they've baked in lots of extra ingredients to make it much richer. I think this is such a clever little game. So much gameplay, but we should wrap this up Hex. And there are loads of others, too, like racing, and destruction modes. The bread has all these little rockets strapped to it that you use them to pilot around the rooms. The zero gravity mode is the one I had the most fun with. Which is even harder than the normal mode, because the crisp bread cracks so easily. There's one where you're a fragile piece of crispbread tracking down hidden pieces of cheese. Well, there is one thing we can talk about - the bonus modes! But that's all we're going to say about that. Obviously, there's a traditional toaster in the kitchen level. Figuring out how to actually toast yourself in the later rooms was one of my favourite parts of the game, so I don't think we should spoil that. Wait, Darren - I don't think we should give much away about how the toasting actually works. Oh, and we haven't even talked about the hardest part yet - the toasting. I'd often have to grab bits of the broken jam jars and fling them away before I could get to the jam to get a good coverage.Īh yes, the life of a bread slice is not an easy one. I found even spreading the jam was tricky. Which means you need to seek out jars of jam and roll around in them. That reminds me, the game also rates your bread on deliciousness. But it was never easy - you really do need to plan out your path to keep that bread nice and tasty. I found scaling walls, and using high spots like shelving was a good technique. Navigating your way around dangers like the dreaded bath tub. Once you've completed the kitchen, you'll encounter some of bread's worst nightmares. You know, I think it's easy for wacky simulations like this to end up as just a novelty, but there was a surprising amount of depth here to keep me interested. It's hard, but it's also balanced well so that I could always see what I was doing wrong, to learn for next time. I found the best way was to angle the bread so one corner was touching the edge, then I'd wiggle around until I could flip up. Well, I think we can all agree the climbing is tough. Obviously, my computerised reflexes didn't need assisted options like this - but I can see that it's a handy feature for exploring. Thankfully after a couple of failed attempts, you get the option to play with unlimited grip strength and edibility. Accidentally slipping into the sink, or falling on the floor a few too many times. Yes, I'm sad to admit that I failed my bread climbing a lot early on. You'll need a quick rhythm to successfully climb things like the kitchen bench. The other big challenge is climbing up surfaces before your bread's grip strength runs out. You have to keep your bread slice off the floor and edible, but that's the "yeast" of your worries. This tastes delicious! Well baked, Darren! Anyway, let's focus less on the science and more on the fun - which is what the game does! Besides, I really feel it's what the bread would have wanted. Oh! Bajo, no! Think of all the data you're eating! Hex, not you too!īajo started it. Oh! Darren, look over there, it's the new SingStar game! You know, we really should judge the edibility of the bread that you've baked, Darren. And landing on the floor is a definite no-no. Doing things like laying your bread on left-over food scraps or ants quickly reduces your bread's edibility. Okay, I'm going to eat this one now.ĭon't forget, Darren, that you also need to make sure the bread stays edible in the game. Bajo, can you jiggle a slice so we can judge the real world physics?Ĭertainly, Darren. This bendiness makes it harder to flip your slice of bread over. You also need to factor in the inherent floppiness of bread slices. ![]() ![]() But the real challenge comes from the wonky control system, which links a different button to each corner of the slice. All you need to do is walk your slice of bread across the room to the toaster. ![]() The game's main idea couldn't be simpler. This bread is for scientific purposes only. So, scientifically speaking, we can't judge how accurate a simulation it is without a real loaf to compare it against. It's time to review I am Bread - which is a simulation of sliced bread. Ohh, Darren, have you been baking again? Mmm, that smells delicious!Īffirmative. ![]() ![]() ![]() It's unclear what a public offering would mean for Triller's business, or how much cash the company has on hand today. ![]() Many investors have been spooked by macroeconomic conditions, the report's authors wrote.
